Follow-up on Rietveld in Zwolle
In my blogpost about the only Rietveld building in Zwolle I mentioned that I could not find a lot of information about the building itself. Well, I still haven't found much, but I wanted to share the little bit that I did find.

Rietveld in Zwolle
There is a lot of nice architecture in Zwolle, most people are aware of that. However, most people know nothing about the background. When I told a few people that I wanted to write something about Zwolle's Rietveld building I got a lot of surprised responses. "There is a building designed by Rietveld in Zwolle?" Yes there is! Besides Rietveld and the Schrale office I also came across some pretty interesting information about the surroundings. And I found a few archives with awesome old pictures! Unfortunately there isn't much information about the Schrale building specifically, I'm starting with some background on Rietveld himself.

Gerrit Rietveld was born in 1888 in Utrecht, his career as a joiner started in his fathers company when he was only eleven years old. While he worked there he followed all kinds of courses, including one of architecture in 1911-1912. His teacher was P.J.C. Klaarhamer, he was taught about the relation between art, politics, literature, design and philosophy. In 1917 he opened his own joiners workshop.
